Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), serves as a major commercial aviation hub for Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region. Commonly referred to as Chek Lap Kok Airport, it derives its name from the island on which it is situated, the Isle of Chek Lap Kok.
Since its inauguration in 1998, the airport has played a crucial role as a regional trans-shipment center, a passenger hub, and a gateway to destinations in Mainland China (with connections to 45 locations) and the rest of Asia. The airport ranks as the world’s busiest cargo gateway and is among the globe’s busiest passenger airports. It also houses one of the largest passenger terminal buildings worldwide, holding the title of the largest upon its opening.
Hong Kong International Airport is the main hub for four passenger airlines: Cathay Pacific, Cathay Dragon, Hong Kong Airlines, and Hong Kong Express. Additionally, it is a hub for 12 airlines providing cargo services. The airport also functions as a focal city for low-cost carriers like China Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Air India, and Emirates.
Operating around the clock, the airport employs approximately 65,000 people. Over 100 airlines run flights from the airport to more than 180 cities globally. In 2023, Hong Kong International Airport accommodated 41 million passengers, ranking it as the 8th busiest airport worldwide by passenger volume. Since 2010, it has surpassed Memphis International Airport to become the world’s busiest airport in terms of cargo traffic.
