In March 2024, I was present on the Air Traffic Controlling Panel when an aircraft called Area Control for a medical emergency. One of the passengers suffered from chest pain during the sick flight. The pilot requested emergency landing priority, which the controller approved, and guided the landing procedures accordingly. By that time, all necessary actions were taken, and doctors and an ambulance were ready. Finally, the passenger’s sick flight received treatment, and he recovered well.
Common Illnesses During Flights
Many types of illnesses can occur when traveling by air. I recommend maintaining hygiene, health, and fitness tips in your daily routine, especially staying cool and fresh during flight time. From my experience, I will share the most common sick flight:
- Heart Attack
- Influenza
- Nausea/Vomiting
- Chest Pain
- Lung Disease
- Dehydration
- High Blood Pressure
Initial Actions Taken by Flight Attendants
The first flight attendant arriving at the scene typically assumes responsibility for the passenger and notifies fellow cabin crew members. They then offer necessary aid, such as obtaining emergency equipment and updating the Captain on the situation, while continually keeping them informed of any developments.
Limitations of Medical Support
During flights, there is a shortage of medical equipment, medicines, doctors, and other necessities. Try to provide appropriate treatment for the victim considering the limitations of medical services. Airline companies typically keep well-trained first aid treatment crews for common health issues.
Assisting Sick Passengers
Flight attendants are trained in basic first aid and CPR. They provide first aid solutions according to the sick person’s needs. If the passenger is seated, they help them adjust their seat to a more comfortable position, provide pillows and blankets for comfort, offer water or other hydrating beverages to prevent dehydration, and maintain regular check-ins.
Declaring a Medical Emergency
Quickly assess the severity of the passenger’s condition. If their health is deteriorating rapidly, if they are unconscious, or if they are experiencing symptoms of a serious medical emergency (e.g., heart attack, stroke), immediate action is necessary.
Maintaining Passenger Morale
Keep passengers informed about the situation while maintaining discretion and privacy for the sick passenger. Brief updates from the flight crew can help reassure passengers that the situation is being handled professionally. Transparency helps alleviate anxiety and uncertainty. Continue with regular in-flight services and activities as much as possible to maintain a sense of normalcy and routine for passengers.
Flight Diversion
If the decision is made to divert, the captain contacts air traffic control to request clearance for diversion and assistance with rerouting the flight to the nearest suitable airport with medical facilities. The captain or a crew member announces the diversion to passengers, explaining the reason for it.
Actions Taken by Air Traffic Controllers
After a flight makes an emergency landing due to a medical emergency, air traffic controllers (ATC) play a crucial role in coordinating the response on the ground. They ensure a safe approach and landing in a very short time, and coordinate with medical services, ambulances, and airport authorities to provide support services such as transportation for passengers, accommodations, and any necessary arrangements for onward travel.
A Harrowing Medical Emergency Story
Mid-flight, a passenger on Flight 123 suffered a heart attack over the Atlantic. Despite turbulent weather, the crew orchestrated an emergency landing. Controllers scrambled to clear airspace amidst thunderstorms. Emergency responders awaited the aircraft, battling gusty winds. The patient was swiftly evacuated to a waiting ambulance. This ordeal emphasized the gravity of in-flight medical emergencies and the crucial role of coordination between crew, controllers, and ground personnel in ensuring the safety and well-being of all aboard.
